New Heights Academy recognizes the unique and inherent abilities of all learners. Our H.E.R.O. (Help, Education, and Resource Options) Program exists to develop the whole child by meeting students where they are. It's mission is to compassionately identify the special learning needs of students and to partner with parents to offer options and implement solutions so each student can grow to their highest potential. The HERO Program offers targeted instruction and is the only faith-based special education program of its kind in the Charleston/Mattoon area.
The HERO Program is available for all students. |
Special Learning Needs
Special learning needs impact a student's ability to access and learn effectively from the general education curriculum. This may include advanced learning, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder (with or without hyperactivity), or disorders affecting sensory perception, processing, or memory. In some cases, medical or emotional conditions may impact learning, which would also constitute a special learning need.
Assessment Process
New students applying for enrollment are interviewed and assessed by our HERO Program Learning Specialist to determine personal learning needs before enrollment. In specific cases, parents or teachers may recommend that a student be assessed after the school year starts. This recommendation is typically made when a student is not making satisfactory progress either academically or socially.
Post-Assessment Consultation
After completion of an appropriate assessment, parents and New Heights staff will discuss any necessary changes to the student's education plan, and a Success Action Plan (SAP) may be written to assure the student's success while at New Heights Academy.
Success Action Plan
The Success Action Plan (SAP) is a document similar to the Individualized Education Program [IEP] that students receive in the public schools. It serves as a communication tool for parents and teachers. It summarizes the student's strengths and specific needs, and outlines the accommodations and modifications the school is able to provide within the classroom. SAPs are updated yearly to facilitate a smooth transition from one grade to the next.
In addition to the SAP, the HERO Program Learning Specialist will be available to consult with parents and teachers and facilitate meetings as needed. The Learning Specialist will provide classroom observations and resources to support the implementation of the SAP while the student is enrolled at New Heights Academy.

- Results of any psychological or intelligence testing or any other evaluations within the last year;

Fees vary and will be disclosed before the SAP is written and implemented.
